Applying ergonomic design principles

Mini Hot Glue Gun Redesign

This project involved choosing any product or system that could benefit from ergonomic design improvements. I presented a functional ergonomic analysis of a mini hot glue gun, a statement of ergonomic design requirements and design deficiencies, and a specific redesign plan. The redesign considered solutions in comfort, safety, health, technology, and productivity.

Stove Control-Display Layout Redesign

This Ergonomics project was inspired by the Shinar and Acton 1978 study, which looked at expectations and preferences around control-display relationships for cooker-ranges through population stereotypes, and compared them to the current product standards for four-burner ranges (both gas and electric, free-standing, and counter-top ranges).

This study was comprised of a literature review, population stereotype survey, and a market survey

The ideal control-display linkage pattern

Our findings suggested that people most prefer stove and cooker-range models that have offset as opposed to aligned arrangements, and control-burner relationships that display mirror symmetry over the midline. We proposed grouping controls according to left and right burners to help increase visual acuity and reaction time through a more intuitive design.
